The use, maintenance, and upkeep of pH electrodes in fermentation tanks

1. Preparation before use

1.1 This instruction applies to online pH electrodes sold by the Mettler MT/Hamilton process testing department.

Before opening the packaging, please check if there is any damage. If the outer packaging is damaged, please do not continue to open the packaging. Immediately contact the transportation department and MT/Hamilton. After the transportation representative arrives, jointly open the packaging and inspect whether the electrodes are damaged. It is recommended to take photos for evidence.

1.3 If the outer packaging is intact but the electrodes are damaged, please contact MT/Hamilton immediately. And send the electrode along with the warranty card, instruction manual, and original packaging back to MT/Hamilton company.

Please carefully read the instruction manual of the electrode before use. If the electrode diaphragm is covered with silicone, carefully scrape off the silicone with the small knife attached to the electrode before use, in the direction from front to back, to avoid damaging the sensitive film. Be careful to scrape off all the silicone on the diaphragm (until the tip of the knife touches the porous ceramic on the diaphragm).

1.5 Observe whether there is liquid inside the pH sensitive membrane bubble. If it is not filled with liquid or there are bubbles, gently shake the electrode to fill the bubble with liquid and no bubbles.

1.6 Before use, the electrode can be soaked in acidic buffer solution (pH 4.00) for a few minutes, and then soaked in neutral buffer solution (pH 6.86 or 7.00, etc.) for a few minutes. Then start calibration again.

2. Precautions for electrode calibration

2.1 Please use fresh buffer solution during calibration. If using buffer produced by MT/Hamilton, it will become ineffective when the buffer fades and cannot be used. If using NIST series (user provided national standard series) buffer solution, it is recommended to use it within one week after preparation. Please refer to the specific instructions for the use of other buffer solutions.

2.2 Place the electrode in the buffer solution for 1 minute before proceeding with subsequent operations.

2.3 Pay attention to selecting the correct buffer series in the transmitter, refer to the instrument user manual.

2.4 After rinsing the electrode, only use a soft tissue to absorb moisture and do not rub the pH sensitive membrane.

The calibration cycle of 2.5 electrodes depends on different usage environments and accuracy requirements, and an appropriate calibration cycle should be determined while ensuring accuracy.
